Is it after watching a movie? Or after hanging out with friends? All those times that the small highly critical voice starts to give you a feeling of “What have I even achieved?”
It has happened to me many times, and I am sure that feeling will not stop coming even after writing this post.
All I’ll do is to remember the things I will say here: They are, maybe, the wholeness of the truth that hits me after my helplessness, a result of my many subconscious, conscious meditation and consultation.
Perhaps you might first want to understand what productivity means. It will give you a yardstick to measure the validity of your feelings.
Looking at definitions is quite stressful for the eyes. However, I beg of you, let your eyes remain fixed as we peruse on these five definitions before I share with you what my resolutions are:
[Definition 1]- Oxford Learner’s Dictionary says Productivity is “the rate at which a worker, a company, or a country produces goods, and the amount produced, compared with how much time, work, and money is needed to produce them”

[Definition 2]- Productivity Coach, Tony Robbins defines Productivity as “getting the result you want with less time and effort”. He added that if you are trying to know how productive you are, then all you are “really seeking is a way to achieve your goals while having time to spend on what matter”.
[Definition 3]- The Republic of Seychelles’ Ministry of Employment defined Productivity as “Productivity is defined as the efficient use of resources, labour, capital, land, materials, energy, information, in the production of various goods and services”.
[Definition 4]- Business Dictionary says it a measure of the efficiency of a person, machine, factory, system, etc., in converting inputs into useful outputs.
[Definition 5]- Darius Foroux, a man who claimed he has been researching the subject “productivity” for over ten years, summed it all up as “working on the right things” and it is “personal measure”.

I agree with Darius Foroux. The term productivity is broad. A topic on it own and it applies to the workforce and personal life (your life, if I may say). Considering these five definitions and the ones that aren’t listed, these are my resolutions (my realities) on what PRODUCTIVITY is:
Reality 1: (It’s the obvious one) The term Productivity is widely used. Some understand it, others don’t.

Reality 2: No matter how widely it is used, it still zeros down to one thing that looks like a formula (Less time, resources or opportunities + other barriers = High Result)

When the questions pop into your mind, demanding if you are productive, remember that there are chances that you might have not been productive (and of course, it’s not a sin). The best way to answer such a mind question is to show evidence that you have achieved more than you are given.
Remember the bible story about a man who gave talents to his 3 servants and went on a journey? If you do, you’ll know that when he returned the one he gave 5 brought 10, the one he gave 2, brought four and he was very furious and commanded the death of the man that came only with the one he gave to him.
The bible story is a proof that if you produce less or equal to the resources at your hand, then, you have to count yourself guilty of the thought of unproductivity and work to be more productive, because there’s always a room for that.
A productive man is the one that maximizes opportunities. Send him to school, he doesn’t come back home to sit and watch TV, he uses the knowledge or certificate to produce multiple times of his tuition fees. Lend him money, he pays his debt, settles the reason why he borrowed the money and even remain fine after that.

ROAD TO PRODUCTIVITY
A clearly defined goal or goals.
What productivity means to you, might be different from what it means to me.
Why you are busy investing money and getting massive profit, I, on the other end, might be investing in books and changing billions of lives.
You will be unproductive if you are given money and profit is not flowing in. I will be unproductive if I am reading a lot of books and it doesn’t affect my life, not to talk about one person.
We will be able to measure our productivity by the goals we set for ourselves. The goals we set help us to navigate through massive opportunities that exist and help us to know the opportunities to maximize.
If we maximize them, we are productive. If we had let it slip off our hand, we are the opposite.

Your goals should have a deadline.

A yardstick to measure productivity is also timeliness. What you can achieve in the space of the amount of time you’ve got.
When you set a goal, give it a deadline. It will help you avoid procrastination. And more interestingly, help you achieve what you may have only have achieved when grey hairs are already sprouting on your head, at the time that you are still young and vibrant.
Let me end like this: Productivity isn’t everything, but in the long run, it is almost everything (Krugman, 1994).
